Cervilenz™, Inc., headquartered near Cleveland, Ohio, is a manufacturer and marketer of a patented, FDA cleared device to predict preterm birth risk in pregnant women by accurately measuring cervical length. Preterm birth (delivery prior to 37 completed weeks of gestation) affects almost 13 percent of pregnancies annually in the United States, representing over 500,000 babies. It is a serious health problem, with increased risk for a variety of newborn complications and lifelong disabilities. Preterm birth is also the leading cause of infant death. Cervical length was established by the National Institutes of Health as a powerful predictor of preterm birth risk in a study utilizing a specialized ultrasound probe and technique. The Cervilenz device is a simple, low cost alternative that can be used by a healthcare professional to identify women who may benefit from progesterone therapy or further consultation by a specialist.

Cryothermic Systems (formerly known as LifeCore Technologies) offers the Excel ® Cryo Cooling System for immediate and selective cooling of the brain after cardiac arrest, stroke, or traumatic brain injury.  A 2009 Cath Lab Digest study reported that, "for every hour to first cooling, the relative hazard of death increases 29%." The coolant and collar system was recently honored for its innovative design and ease of use by EMS Pro Magazine and by the Journal of Emergency Medical Services. The company is working to accelerate adoption by hospitals and EMS services.

Genomoncology is in the personalized medicine space with a proprietary technology platform to rapidly analyze sequenced genomic data for use in cancer treatment. The platform enables users to browse, filter and map variations at many different levels to discover the genetic mutations that are unique to the tumor. From this analysis, the company will generate a customizable report, including findings and clinical recommendations based on the observed actionable mutations in the tumor genome. As cancer is a disease of genetic mutation, this type of personalized approach represent the future of oncology.

Juventas Therapeutics is a Cleveland Clinic spin-off company developing novel regenerative therapies for cardiovascular disease. Several studies have demonstrated that the company’s lead product, Stromal Derived Factor-1 (SDF-1) significantly increases cardiac function through promoting cell survival and revascularization after a heart attack. Juventas’ first generation SDF-1 platform is based on engineering cellular therapies currently in clinical trials to deliver SDF-1 to damaged heart tissue. Through a strategic partnership, Juventas anticipates advancing this platform to a Phase 1 Clinical Trial in 2008. Recent data also suggests that SDF-1 can also be delivered through non-cell based delivery methods providing a cheaper, logistically more manageable second-generation alternative to current cell therapy initiatives.

Minimally Invasive Devices LLC (MID) is a medical device company that develops innovative products that facilitate and simplify Minimally Invasive Surgery. Surgery performed through less invasive access is the dominant growth opportunity in all surgical disciplines and is highly dependent upon the development of clever devices that enable difficult surgical maneuvers or allow them to be performed by more surgeons. MID will develop as its first two products Clear-Vu, a device to improve visualization during laparoscopic surgery, and Clear-Path, a device to facilitate the removal of kidney stones from the ureter. Neuros Medical, a Cleveland, Ohio-based neurostimulation company, is focused on developing neurostimulation therapies for unmet needs to patients worldwide. The company’s platform technology, Nerve Block, provides patients with elimination of chronic pain and spasticity in a variety of applications including neuroma/residual limb pain with potential applications in cancer pain, diabetic neuropathy, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.

TheraVasc is developing a repurposed drug, TV1001 (an oral formulation of sodium nitrite) to targets patient populations with poor blood flow to the extremities, such as those with diabetic leg and foot problems or those with peripheral artery disease (PAD). While there are a large and growing number of patients suffering from each of these diseases, there are no effective treatments available. TV1001 has been shown to selectively promote the re-growth of blood vessels only in ischemic tissues such as those affected in patients with diabetes or by PAD.
